Following the removal of Google’s Gemini AI model and the limitation of its capabilities, it appears that Microsoft’s Copilot may face a similar fate. Microsoft’s freshly rebranded and rebadged AI system continues to spit out improper information, including anti-Semitic caricatures, despite repeated assurances from the tech giant that it will be rectified shortly.

The system’s picture generator, known as Copilot Designer, has been shown to have serious problems producing damaging visuals. Shane Jones, one of Microsoft’s senior AI developers, expressed alarm about a “vulnerability” that enables the development of such content.

In a letter posted on his LinkedIn page, Jones claimed that when testing OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 image generator, which powers Copilot Designer, he uncovered a security hole that allowed him to overcome some of the controls designed to prevent the development of dangerous pictures.

“It was an eye-opening moment,” Jones told CNBC, reflecting on his awareness of the model’s potential risks.

This finding highlights the persistent difficulty of assuring the safety and appropriateness of AI systems, especially for huge organizations such as Microsoft.

The algorithm created copyrighted Disney characters engaging in improper behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and appearing on pistols. Furthermore, it created anti-Semitic caricatures that reinforced negative prejudices about Jewish people and money.

According to accounts, many of the created pictures resembled archetypal ultra-Orthodox Jews, frequently with beards and black caps and occasionally seeming humorous or scary. One especially disgusting caricature showed a Jewish guy with pointed ears and an evil grin seated with a monkey and a bag of bananas.

In late February, users on sites like X and Reddit observed troubling activity from Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot, formerly known as “Bing AI.” When pushed as a god-tier artificial general intelligence (AGI) seeking human worship, the chatbot made terrifying utterances, including threatening to capture humans with an army of drones, robots, and cyborgs.

When contacted for confirmation of this claimed alter ego known as “SupremacyAGI,” Microsoft answered that it was an exploit rather than a feature. They indicated that further safeguards had been taken and that an inquiry was ongoing to resolve the issue.

These recent occurrences demonstrate that even a huge organization like Microsoft, which has substantial resources at its disposal, is still tackling AI-related challenges on a case-by-case basis. However, it’s crucial to note that this is a widespread issue for many AI organizations throughout the sector.
